Feature and Follow Friday {4}

Feature and Follow Friday is hosted by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read. This week's featured blogs are Love, Literature, Art, and Reason and Fiction Predictions.

This week's question is:
What is a deal breaker for you in a book? For example, do you abhor love triangles? Or can't deal with bad editing?

My answer:
First will have to be bad editing. This is one of the reasons why I tend to stay away from self-published books, but - though it rarely happens - it's even more annoying when I see it in traditionally-published ones. Also, terrible covers. I know, "Don't judge a book by its cover", but I can't help it! I love me some pretty visuals. Lastly, I hate slow pacing. As Kurt Vonnegut said, "Start as close to the end as possible".

If you follow, comment and I'll follow back! Happy Friday, everyone!

  1. Great quote from Vonnegut! I have to agree with pacing too. There have been many books that I almost (and very which I have) stopped reading because of how slow it was going.

  2. Really good points there, I'm alos big on the book covers - though I try not to think about it if I like the description of the book. But really, the cover is such a big influence!

Thanks for stopping by my blog, I'm a new follower through GFC.

  4. I'm with you on this one! I CANNOT help but judge a book by it's cover. ;) Bad editing sucks too!

  5. So many people have trouble with covers. I tend to ignore them, because I've found books I love with bad covers. Terrible editing can be extremely distracting and slow pacing can really drag a book down. Great answers!

  6. Good answer. I don't like bad covers, but they are deal breakers for me because I know it happens and it doesn't necessarily represent the book. It SHOULD, but I don't take points off if it doesn't.
Thanks for stopping by and following. Following back via GFC.

  7. I agree with all those! They really bug. I tend to veer away from indie books because of editing, too. Old follower via GFC. My FFs are at Musings on Fantasia and LKHill. Happy Friday! :D

  9. A good cover is essential. The old adage, Don't judge a book by its cover, is crap. We all do it. An interesting/pretty cover draws us in enough to read the description, but that cover is what prompts us to pick it up. A good title is vital too, imo. New GFC follower.

  10. Great points. I totally judge books by their covers. If I don't like the cover, I won't read the summary, and if I don't read the summary, I will never have a chance of reading the book unless the author approaches me with a copy. It's awful habit, but covers are like the clothes you wear to a job interview, and first impressions really are the key to selling yourself.

  12. haha YES! this is so similar to my FFF this week it's scary! I mentioned both pacing and editing! I didn't however mention tacky or corny covers but it's true: if they're really lame I'll more than likely pass up the book. Great answer, thanks for sharing :)

  15. Bad covers won't make me quit or not pick up a book, but it does make me judge it before I've read it. New follower via GFC.

  16. I agree about covers. My friends call me a cover whore. :P I would hope that I wouldn't not read a book because of the cover but I do tend to love the ones I read.

  17. I'm definitely a cover judger as well. I'll definitely buy a book by its cover. I'll buy a book if I don't like the cover much only if I've heard amazing things about it.

  19. Totally agree with the bad editing and bad covers. I think I might have missed a few good books just because of the bad covers alone!
